For me, certification gives you far more kngelwdoe about your certification material than you would ever learn on the job'. Myself included in this, self taught people think they know far more than they actually do. Certification for me, was a massive down to earth' humbling experience that has taught me a massive amount that, in a day job, 80% you would simply never get to experience as your job role simply doesn't involve or cover those areas of the technology. But that kngelwdoe allows you the confidence and self assuredness to carry out your job far more efficiently and professionally

Hence why I'm just not going to jump into IT in order to pay the bills. To be perfectly honest, I was tempted to try for a little bit -- until I saw the sheer amount of work and study C. had to do, just for a basic cert. I don't have the energy for that kind of thing, and I just have too many other things I want to do with my time, now and in the future.

In other words, it takes dedication -- and if you're not willing or able to be that dedicated, recognize it and move on to greener pastures. This simply isn't your parents' IT anymore (no matter how much my own mother insists it is, though I love her and respect the work she does), and you can't even just get a few basic certs and find work, or even get a Bachelor's Degree in just any old subject and then waltz into the field. To use my mother's example again, she got her BA in Music Performance, and employers in the 80's wanted a degree and a few classes, so she got into the field pretty easily. But that was then, and this is now; you just can't do that anymore, because technology changes and grows at such a rapid pace these days that you could find yourself behind in the race in as little as a few months -- hence, the constant cycle: study, test, repeat.

And it baffles me when I hear so many people I know with a decade or two of IT experience saying, "Well, I've been doing this for my whole career, so I don't need any new certs." And I want to ask them: Are you crazy? You have been paying attention at least a little bit to how quickly technology is changing these days, haven't you? Hell -- if we can go from blocky cell phones that are as big as my hand to sleek, tiny little things that also have Internet access and music and qwerty keyboards, all in the span of less than a decade, what on earth makes you think that system and server technologies wouldn't develop at much the same speed?

It makes the tumor grow, I'm telling you.

Well, after about a week or so of dealing with some things to keep me busy, I can report back that Microsoft did, in fact, cheap out a little bit and gave trial copies of Office 2010 during the event, (I was in the IT professionals track, I don't know how the developers fared with Visual Studio 2010.)

The majority of our track focused on the new features of SharePoint 2010 and how it interacts with Office 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

All the launch events of Microsoft's I've been to sent me home with full, working versions of the software they were pitching. In 2005, I walked away with Visual Studio 2005 Professional and a single-CPU license of SQL Server. For the Vista launch, they gave us full versions of Vista Ultimate, and for the Office 2007/Exchange 2007 launch, we got full versions of Office 2007 Ultimate. I would imagine that this event's the same, but I'll know for sure in a few hours when I get over to the event; I'll report back with the resulting schwag when the event is over here in San Francisco.
