In a category I like to call “why the hell is this even news?!?”, a lot of people got a chuckle out of President Obama’s kung fu fly-chop during an interview with CNBC the other day.
As opposed to this being nothing but a funny entry on a comedy blog, (I laughed when I saw it, just as I laugh at other “blooper videos”,) it actually turned into news when PETA showed outrage at the incident, no joke: PETA miffed at President Obama’s fly “execution”
PETA’s blog points out that they were approached for comment about the incident and did not make any unprovoked statements,
Believe it or not, we’ve actually been contacted by multiple media outlets wanting to know PETA’s official response to the executive insect execution.
In a nutshell, our position is this: He isn’t the Buddha, he’s a human being, and human beings have a long way to go before they think before they act.
Immediately following these comments, they were quick to plug a product they sell and stated that they’ll be sending him a humane bug catcher for future use. . . yes, my head hurts too. They’ll never back down on the position that we shouldn’t even swat flies, but I’m hoping that the present is at least an attempt at humor and that there won’t be follow-up stories of a letter containing lecture on cruelty to animals to go along with the thing. Hopefully, they realize that they were only contacted by other news organizations because somewhere, some producer saw the video and suggested his reporters ask PETA for comment between fits of laughter.
If nothing else, maybe this will boost President Obama’s approval ratings with conservatives and his critics. He’s sending a strong message to the rest of the world: if this is what he does to flies, just imagine what he’ll do to Kim Jong-Il if North Korea doesn’t back off their nuclear weapons program.
Apparently there’s been quite a stir about reporters standing up for the new president when he enters a room. I did like this video from CNN, showing another angle of the story and giving a chance for one of the so-called “liberal media reporters” to show his bleeding heart. It’s very true, the look on the face of the reporter from Fox News is rather funny when he spots Obama coming and then springs to his feet with the others, (I probably would have swallowed my tongue too, if the President walked in on me while I was asking a question,): CNN Video – Stand Up or Sit Down?
Chances are, the excitement about President Obama will wear off in the coming months. The media will go back to covering political blunders, wars, and celebrity scandals while Republican senators and congressmen eventually get their hormones under control and get back to work across the isle from their I-hope-I-don’t-offend-someone-by-having-an-opinion Democratic counterparts. Maybe Nancy Pelosi will grow a spine, maybe Fred Thompson will learn to keep his mouth shut, who knows? The times they are a-changin’, and maybe we’ll change back to what it was like when politicians were elected to do their jobs first and worry about their popularity and which side is winning second. Either way, I’m going to keep drinking.
I’d also like to go back to the winter of 2001, and remind everyone who feels as if though they are now in the minority and being robbed of their civil liberties of your reaction to anyone who opposed the Bush administration. I’d like you to think back to that time, to the height of post-9/11 fervor, and try to imagine for a moment what your reaction would have been to me telling you “I hope the president fails. I oppose his policies, and I hope he fails in protecting us. There’s nothing wrong with me saying that, it’s my constitutional right and I hope he fails to prevent further attacks. If Al Gore had been elected, we’d be safer now.” Just remember, no matter how self-righteous you are, you don’t always get to be in the top stall of the outhouse.

I know I’m a few days late with this, but it still makes me smile every time I think of it.
Just to make sure that we’re covering all the bases:
So, as the whole world keeps their eyes on the election numbers, I’ve been noticing some funny things around the ‘net today.
The first is Karl Rove. While not only looking like a giant, mutant baby, he also had some interesting predictions about the election. I suppose it’s an inevitable conclusion at his point, no matter which side of the fence you fall on.
And speaking of those who like to straddle (the fence), this latest parody of Sarah Palin did make me laugh quite a bit and I think those of you over 18 may enjoy it as well. (DEFINITELY NOT SAFE FOR WORK)
On the subject of sex-appeal, I thought this article was very interesting. I wonder if the “change of standards” was because of the vacation the student was on, being out of her normal element. . . and for that matter, does the same go for the carpainter, being out of his home and around strangers?
